“Pride and Prejudice” is the best known novel of the famous British writer Jane Austen (1775 – 1817).
Amorous hearts every now and then easily get over social barriers but sometimes they fail skirting the walls of their own pride, natural misapprehensions or even prejudice.
21-year-old Jane Austen succeeded in revealing so masterly aspirations and disappointments, anxieties and feelings of enamoured Elizabeth and Mr Darcy that even today millions of readers of different generations admirably read her novel.
It is notable for its touching romantic mood, light humour, psychologically exact portraits of its characters.
If it were not for this book, there would be possibly neither “psychological” nor “chick-lit” novels, nor even feminist literature in general.

Charlotte Brontë’s most beloved novel describes the passionate love between the courageous orphan Jane Eyre and the brilliant, brooding, and domineering Rochester.

Jane Eyre [Текст] / Ch. Bronte ; with an Introduction by L. Hughes-Hallett. — London : David Campbell Publishers Ltd., 1991. — 284p. — (Everyman’s Library). — Англ. мовою.
“Jane Eyre” (originally published as “Jane Eyre: An Autobiography”) is a novel by English writer Charlotte Brontë.
It was published on 16 October 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. of London, England, under the pen name “Currer Bell.”
Primarily of the bildungsroman genre, Jane Eyre follows the emotions and experiences of its title character, including her growth to adulthood, and her love for Mr. Rochester, the byronic master of fictitious Thornfield Hall.
In its internalisation of the action – the focus is on the gradual unfolding of Jane’s moral and spiritual sensibility and all the events are coloured by a heightened intensity that was previously the domain of poetry – Jane Eyre revolutionised the art of fiction.
Charlotte Brontë has been called the “first historian of the private consciousness” and the literary ancestor of writers like Joyce and Proust.
The novel contains elements of social criticism, with a strong sense of morality at its core, but is nonetheless a novel many consider ahead of its time given the individualistic character of Jane and the novel’s exploration of classism, sexuality, religion, and proto-feminism.

Wuthering Heights [Текст] / E. Bronte. — Harmondsworth : Penguin Books, 1985. — 370p. — Англ. мовою.
“Wuthering Heights” is a wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine’s father.
After Mr Earnshaw’s death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine’s brother Hindley and wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries.
The action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature.

Each “Glencoe Literature Library” book consists of a complete novel or play accompanied by several related readings, such as short stories, poems, essays, or informational articles.
“Wuthering Heights” is one of the most strikingly original novels ever written. Its elements are simple to relate: the passionate relationship between Catherine Earnshaw and the dark, brooding Heathcliff, the destructive effects of their love, and the wild backdrop of the Yorkshire moors, based on the landscape around Emily Brontë’s native Haworth.
Yet the novel is much more complex than this.
It has an intricate structure in which events are recounted to an external narrator, a traveller called Lockwood, by the housekeeper Nelly Dean, whose down-to-earth voice throws the intensity of Catherine and Heathcliff’s story into sharp relief
Names are repeated down the generations, relationships are interwoven and devices such as Catherine’s diary give us further insights into the characters.

Wuthering Heights [Текст] / E. Bronte ; with an Introduction by K. Frank. — London : David Campbell Publishers Ltd., 1991. — 385p. — (Everyman’s Library). — Англ. мовою.
“Wuthering Heights”, Emily Brontë’s only novel, was published in 1847 under the pseudonym “Ellis Bell”.
Although “Wuthering Heights” is now a classic of English literature, contemporaneous reviews were deeply polarised; it was controversial because of its unusually stark depiction of mental and physical cruelty, and it challenged strict Victorian ideals regarding religious hypocrisy, morality, social classes and gender inequality.
The story is told in layers, a format that has earned the novel much praise despite initial mixed reviews. It is the story of Catherine and Heathcliff and how their unresolved passion eventually destroys them both.
The novel is also about envy, nostalgia, pessimism and resentment.
“Wuthering Heights” contains elements of gothic fiction and the moorland setting is a significant aspect of the drama.
The novel has inspired many adaptations, including film, radio and television dramatisations; a musical; a ballet; operas, and a song by Kate Bush.

The Awakening. A Solitary Soul [Текст] / K. Chopin. — London : David Campbell Publishers Ltd., 1992. — 221p. — (Everyman’s Library). — Англ. мовою.
With its forthright treatment of sex and depression, “The Awakening” (originally titled “A Solitary Soul”), first published in 1899, was so shocking to turn-of-the-century readers that it was neglected for decades.
Rediscovered in the 1960s, this brief, beautiful novel is considered a landmark of early feminism.
It is the story of Edna Pontellier, a twenty-eight-year-old wife and mother of two who – with devastating consequences – rejects her conventional married life for a transgressive path of self-discovery.
Edna is vacationing with her husband and children on the Louisiana Gulf Coast when she meets and falls in love with the passionate, impulsive Robert Lebrun. Afterward, Edna can no longer find meaning and satisfaction in her comfortable domestic life and moves out, alone.
Her tragic quest for personal, creative, and erotic freedom is at the heart of this now-classic novel which captures women’s desires with extraordinary frankness, sympathy, and intensity.
Dickens, Ch.
Great Expectations [Текст] / Ch. Dickens ; Illustrated by F.W.Pailthorpe; with an Introduction by M. Slater. — London : David Campbell Publishers Ltd., 1992. — 469p. : ill. — (Everyman’s Library). — Англ. мовою.
“Great Expectations” is Charles Dickens’s thirteenth novel.
It is his second novel, after David Copperfield, to be fully narrated in the first person.
“Great Expectations” is a bildungsroman, or a coming-of-age novel, and it is a classic work of Victorian literature.
It depicts the growth and personal development of an orphan named Pip.
The novel is collected and dense, with a conciseness unusual for Dickens. According to G. K. Chesterton, Dickens penned “Great Expectations” in “the afternoon of [his] life and fame.” It was the penultimate novel Dickens completed, preceding Our Mutual Friend.
It is set among the marshes of Kent and in London in the early to mid-1800s. The novel contains some of Dickens most memorable scenes, including its opening, in a graveyard, when the young orphan Pip is accosted by the escaped convict, Abel Magwitch.
“Great Expectations” is a graphic book, full of extreme imagery, poverty, prison ships (“the hulks”), barriers and chains, and fights to the death.
Upon its release, Thomas Carlyle spoke of “All that Pip’s nonsense.”
Later, George Bernard Shaw praised the novel as “All of one piece and consistently truthfull.” Dickens felt “Great Expectations” was his best work, calling it “a very fine idea,” and was very sensitive to compliments from his friends: “Bulwer, who has been, as I think you know, extraordinarily taken by the book.”Great Expectations has a colourful cast that has entered popular culture: the capricious Miss Havisham, the cold and beautiful Estella, Joe the kind and generous blacksmith, the dry and sycophantic Uncle Pumblechook, Mr. Jaggers, Wemmick with his dual personality, and the eloquent and wise friend, Herbert Pocket.
Throughout the narrative, typical Dickensian themes emerge: wealth and poverty, love and rejection, and the eventual triumph of good over evil.
“Great Expectations” has become very popular and is now taught as a classic in many English classes.
It has been translated into many languages and adapted many times in film and other media.

“The Great Gatsby” (1925) is his most celebrated and exemplary novel of the “Jazz Age” , a term he coined himself.
The author, in an extraordinarily masterly manner, described the post-war generation’s psychological prostration under the guise of the carnival brilliance of life.
The novel is a fascinating, exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s in which the American Dream turned out to be a tragedy.

“The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald is the classic American novel about the importance and futility of dreams.
It tells the story of Jay Gatsby, whose ability to make his dreams a reality through sheer force of will initially seems boundless.
However, this self-made millionaire and embodiment of the American Dream eventually discovers that even love, wealth and ambition are powerless in the face of rigid class boundaries, proving that the myth of the American Dream ultimately rings hollow.
Today, “The Great Gatsby” is considered the quintessential novel about the American Jazz Age, and is widely viewed as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece. Fitzgerald drew a great deal of inspiration from his own experiences of the Roaring Twenties in New York to write the novel, and his status as one of the most famous American writers of the 20th century can be largely attributed to “The Great Gatsby’s” enduring success.

Somerset Maugham, the author of the classic novels “Of Human Bondage” and “Up at the Villa”, introduces us to Julia Lambert, a woman of breathtaking poise and talent whose looks have stood by her forty-six years. She is one of the greatest actresses England–so good, in fact, that perhaps she never stops acting.
It seems that noting can ruffle her satin feathers, until a quiet stranger who challenges Julia’s very sense of self.
As a result, she will endure rejection for the first time, her capacity as a mother will be affronted, and her ability to put on whatever face she desired for her public will prove limited.
In “Theatre”, Maugham subtly exposes the tensions and triumphs that occur when acting and reality blend together, and–for Julia–ultimately reverse.

Shakespeare, W.
Romeo and Juliet [Текст] / W. Shakespeare. — Moscow : Higher School, 1972. — 125p. — Англ. мовою.
“Romeo and Juliet” is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare between 1591-1595, and it remains one of his most popular and frequently performed plays. The romance between Romeo and Juliet has become the foundation for many derivative romantic works and established the title characters as the best known of any young lovers in literature. Shakespeare borrowed from other famous tales written earlier in the sixteenth century but expanded upon the plot and characters to create his own version of the famous story.
The play is set in Verona, Italy, and begins with a scuffle between members the rival families Montague and Capulet.
An age-old vendetta between two powerful families erupts into bloodshed.
A group of masked Montague risk further conflict by gatecrashing a Capulet party. A young lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet, who is due to marry her father’s choice, the County Paris.
With the help of Juliet’s nurse, the women arrange for the couple to marry the next day, but Romeo’s attempt to halt a street fight leads to the death of Juliet’s own cousin, Tybalt, for which Romeo is banished.
In a desperate attempt to be reunited with Romeo, Juliet follows the Friar’s plot and fakes her own death.
The message fails to reach Romeo, and believing Juliet dead, he takes his life in her tomb. Juliet wakes to find Romeo’s corpse beside her and kills herself.
The grieving family agree to end their feud.
